Where am I?

The paysite had been up and running for only a fortnight when we had our first significant hacker attack. It took up so many server resources that our hosting company suspended the site for a couple of hours while we fixed the problem.

Obviously we don’t want service to genuine honest members and guests to be disrupted, and we do want people who try to steal our content to burn and rot in hell forever. Or at least to go away and annoy somebody else. So we are well defended against hotlinking and password mis-use.
Members, if your password is used from too many IP addresses in a limited amount of time, it will be automatically deactivated and you’ll be given one chance to get a new password. If that shows evidence of password fraud, your account will most probably be permanently suspended.
If you think your password may have been compromised, email us <pword AT convolvulus.net> or use ConHELPulus and we’ll cancel it and issue a new one.

SPAM. We hate it as much as you do, and our ambition is to make Convolvulus a spam-free zone. Unfortunately, the spammers are a bit too clever and we can’t guarantee that you won’t get spam as a result of using this site and our services. Nobody can do that for any site.

What we can do is to promise that we will do all we can to minimise spam and eliminate it wherever possible. For instance, all the scripts on the site (the things that make the Guestbook, the Forum, the Blog, the Tell A Friend, etc. work) have various kinds of anti-spam and anti-hacker protection built in. You’re as safe using them as it’s realistically possible to be. Of course, if you want to be totally safe in this electronic world, you should throw your computer away, shred every piece of paper that goes in or out of your house, use cash instead of electronic money (and don’t get that from a cash machine!), never leave the house for fear of CCTV cameras, get rid of your mobile phone...

We do what we can. And you can help by letting us know through ConHELPulus if you get spam etc. that you think can be traced back to visiting this site. Then we will stay up all night if necessary to identify that hole in our defences and plug it. By which time the spammers will have found another one.

But we won’t give up.
